Brant Samson advertises for a mail order bride because raising three children after the death of his beloved wife is proving to be impossible. After reading Mr. Samson's classified advertisement in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Abigail Mary Vaughn garners enough courage to respond. Her motivations are simple She loves children, she's always dreamed of having her own family, and since she is now considered an old maid, she'll more than likely spend the rest of her life in gut-wrenching loneliness unless she does something unconventional.

I enjoyed reading this story.
When the heroine saw the hero's ad for a wife, she was in that time in life where she can honestly ask 'what else could she lose?' She has a kind and big heart ready to be filled and she's hoping, with people who will value her back. I admire her more when she came through her initial struggle against her prospective family, the rugged land and living, and since this is a romance the unwanted rival.
The hero is presented as your typical male character. Widow, with children to raise, struggling farm, and his share of family issue. I wanted to hit him during their firt meeting since he is acting like a typical man towards a woman they consider not pretty while the heroine is twisted in knots for being in a very strange sorrounding for the first time. But like I said, he is just a man.
I loved that they started their relationship in honesty and that the progress in their story is paced just right. The issues they came against are as true then as it is now between starting couples. The insecurities, family dramas, adjustments, and of course tragedies that can either break the family or make them stronger.
Overall, the story distinguished itself for me by the plot, a few unique twists, and mostly by the strength of the heroine's character. Sometimes a tear-jerker, especially towards the end, and sometimes funny. Even the couples' bedroom activities are hot without being graphic. Mostly, it covers relationship between family members, the good times and the bad, and getting to know each other.

Abby Mail Order Bride Unconventional Series Book 1 edition by Verna Clay Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Other reviewers have given away the sad plotline of this book, but I'll go ahead and put a

****SPOILER ALERT****
This was really sad. ( I truly wasn't expecting Ty to die midway through the book. I'd gotten to know him and thought he seemed like such a sweet little guy. Then he dies? That's not at all what I was expecting in a romance novel like this.
****END SPOILER****

This author was easy to read, and I was enjoying the story. It was a fairly simple plot - actually, it reminded me a lot of "Love Comes Softly" - much of the story was exactly that plot - including the child who wasn't keen on having a new mother come into the home.

There were the occasional spelling and grammatical errors that did distract from the story; there were a few times in which I had to reread the sentence multiple times to figure out what it was trying to convey. But I was willing to forgive those errors, because I was curious to know what happened next in the story.

This wasn't a completely "squeaky clean" story - meaning there was a bit of language and some intimacy within marriage. So, if someone is looking for that kind of book, you might be a little cautious. However, the amount of those things isn't overwhelming, and I don't think it would be a drawback to reading it, if you're willing to accept the little bit that's there.

Another reviewer said, though, "The book is well written and easy to read but I will not read another by this author. I don't like to feel cheated and reading about a dead toddler isn't my idea of escapism. If I want sad and depressing I will just watch the news." And I'm afraid I have to agree with this assessment of the book. If this is indicative of the kind of stories this series is about, I think I need to pass. Coming across that in the book was a shock last night and not what I was wanting in a romance. True life romance may not always be happy, but a romance novel should be. A romance novel should leave you happy after reading it. This one didn't. (
I got this book because I love mail order bride books. I'm a big fan of Kristen Osbourne and Ruth Ann Nordin mail order bride novels'. They write happy yet slightly dramatic novels with a hint at humor which is something I love reading, takes my mind away from the stresses I face during a long day.

When I found this book I thought this could be another good happy read... and it was for the first half of the book, I enjoyed it immensely. Until tragedy struck this happy family. Then, it became a 'tearjerker'. Even though I finished the novel I was just depressed for the rest of it. I don't mind reading sad books but I don't go intentionally looking for them because with the hectic days I have I'd rather enjoy a good HEA. The ending was sweet but by then I was too focused on the sadness I experienced earlier in the book. I hated this...

This was a book about a man and his 3 children, whom recently lost his wife and he finds himself needing help in raising them. He reluctantly advertises for a mail order bride and finds Abby. They get along great, he begins to like her while at the same time fighting his feeling of betrayal to his first wife (which I must say in my head his going to whore's for companionship contradicted his feelings of betrayal for taking on a wife but was more than ok to sleep around). Abby is a great character. I was absolutely pleased by her. They marry, have their dramatic moments with the children and their lives begin to settle comfortably until tragedy strikes them. They eventually pull through it as a strong family should... I won't go into detail as to not spoil the book for anyone.

This is just my opinion alone. I know what I like, what I enjoy and don't enjoy. I would recommend this book with the clear knowledge that you WILL cry and you WILL get depressed towards the end... if that's something that absolutely doesn't sound like you'd read I'd skip right on to something else.

Even though it will not go into my most favorites this book is a well written light read.
